“Hertog Robillard bezocht Bremen in 1985 en 2008…”

Michael John "Duke" Robillard (1948) is een Amerikaanse muzikant, met (nu al!) een opmerkelijke, méér dan 55-jarige carrière. Hoewel hij bekend staat als rock en blues gitarist, speelt hij ook jazz en swing. Duke Robillard wordt qua stijl wel eens vergeleken met zijn voorganger T-Bone Walker. Robillard speelde in bands als Mike "Honey Bear" Robillard en werkte voor de iconische Guild Guitar Company, die al meer dan 60 jaar lang handgemaakte Guild gitaren bouwt. In 1967 richtte Robillard samen met pianist Alman LeGrande “Al” Copley, Roomful of Blues op. Hij speelde meer dan tien jaar met de band, voordat hij in 1979 vertrok en gitarist werd van rockabillyzanger Robert Gordon (1947-2022) en vervolgens lid van de Legendary Blues Band. Hij richtte de Duke Robillard Band op in 1981 en nam uiteindelijk de naam Duke Robillard and the Pleasure Kings aan, met wie hij in de jaren tachtig toerde en opnam voor Rounder Records. Hij werd lid van de legendarische Fabulous Thunderbirds, waar harmonicaspeler Kim Wilson (1951) nog steeds in speelt en waar hij in 1990 Jimmie Vaughan op gitaar verving. Meer recent was Robillard de medeoprichter van het New Guitar Summit sextet en van Sunny & Her Joy Boys van zanger Sunny Crownover. 

Duke Robillard stond al in de studio samen met groten als Jimmy Witherspoon, Snooky Prior, Jay McShann, Hal Singer, Ruth Brown, Billy Boyd Arnold, Eddie Clearwater, Pinetop Perkins, Joe Louis Walker, Todd Sharpville, Wham!, Tom Waits en Bob Dylan. In 2006 tourde Robillard nog in de States met Tom Waits tijdens de promotie van Waits’ ‘Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards‘ album en in 2013 als lead gitarist in de band van Nobelprijswinnaar Robert Allen Zimmerman, aka de nu 81-jarige Bob Dylan (1948).

Robillard debuteerde in 1984 bij Rounder (onafhankelijk roots label, in 1970 in Sommerville opgericht door Marian Leighton LevyKen Erwin & Bill Nowlin) met ‘Duke Robillard & the Pleasure Kings’. Zijn 2010-album ‘Tales from the Tiki Lounge’, dat hij opnam metSunny Crownover, was een tribute aan een andere iconische gitaarbouwer, singer-songwriter en gitarist Lester William Polsfuss (1915–2009) aka Les Paul. Voor die gelegenheid speelde hij o.a. op een Gold Top en andere -waarschijnlijke speciale- Les Paul gitaren.

‘Blues Full Circle’ nam Robillard in 2016 op voor het Canadese inde-label, Stony Plain label met “his” All-Star Combo. De opvolger ‘Ear Worms’ (2019) met zijn band: Bruce Bears (piano, Hammondorgel), Brad Hallen (a/e bas) & Mark Teixeira (drums, percussie) en, met de “usual” Special Guests, die ditmaal vooral door hun zangkwaliteiten opvielen. Ik noem hier de Bostonian Chris Cote, Sunny Crownover, Mark Cutler, Julie Grant, Dave Howard en Klem Klimek.

Van Robillard weten we dat “stilzitten” nog niet over zijn lippen rolt. ‘Blues Bash!’ verscheen in 2020, ‘Swingin' Again’ (met Scott Hamilton) in 2021 (bij Blue Duchess) en ‘They Called It Rhythm & Blues’ in 2022 (ook bij Stony Plain). Zijn doelstelling blijft om “rechttoe rechtaan blues in vintage-stijl te maken met aanstekelige, dansbare ritmes…”.

MIG-Music bracht in het voorbije jaar een bijzonder album met live opnames in Bremen van Duke Robillard uit 1985 en 2008 uit: ‘Duke’s Mood – Live in Bremen 1985 & 2008’.  Duke Robillard stond op 28/03/1985 in de Schauburg en in 2008 in Moments club in Bremen. Beide shows werden uitgezonden en opgenomen door Radio Bremen. Robillard, die sinds begin jaren tachtig vooral zijn eigen bands leidt, stond er met twee daarvan. Een trio uit 1985 (The Pleasure Kings) met naast Robillard (gitaar, zang),  Thomas Enright (bas, zang) & Tom DeQuattro (drums) en, een kwintet uit 2008 (Duke Robillard Band) met naast Robillard (zang, e gitaar), Doug James (bas, harmonica),  Bruce Bears (orgel, keys), John Ross (e bas) & Mark Teixeira (drums).

“When I first heard Hank Williams as a kid, to me that was the blues. When I heard Chuck Berry and Fats Domino, that was the blues. When I heard Muddy Waters, that was the blues and, when I heard Count Basie, a lot of that was blues…“ (Duke Robillard, 2011)

Voor de 1985-show (Robillard was toen 37) maakte Duke Robillard samen met The Pleasure Kings, zijn muzikale voorkeuren duidelijk met een mix van zeven eigen composities en vier covers. Op de playlist stonden minder bekende “obscure” songs als Chuck Berry’s B-kantje (van “It Wasn’t Me”), “It’s My Own Business” (‘Fresh Berry’s’, 1965) en B.B. King’s swingende B-kantje (van “The Jungle”) uit 1967, “Long Gone Baby”. Van Lowell Fulson & Jimmy McCracklin koos Robillard de titelsong van het gelijknamige album, “Tramp” (1967). Wat je goed kon horen tijdens beide optredens in Bremen, was de overduidelijke invloed van Aaron Thibeaux Walker aka T-Bone Walker (1910-1975) -die Walker opdeed door naar jazz saxofonisten en trompettisten te luisteren- op Robillard’s speelwijze. In de Schauburg in Bremen was die te horen op de bijna zeven minuten lange versie van “T-Bone Boogie”. Walker nam het nummer zelf op in Chicago in 1945 met Marl Young’s Orchestra. De instrumentale slow blues à la lettre, “Duke’s Mood” (https://youtu.be/gCPUSFPAUFo)kondigde  Robillard (toen) aan als een “nieuw” nummer. Het verscheen samen met het aanstekelige “Too Hot to Handle”, “Tore Up” en “Let Me Love You Baby” op zijn 1988-album ‘Rockin’ Blues’, dat hij opnam met The Pleasure Kings. Met de “Zugabe” “Closing Time” (een nummer dat Robillard schreef met Thom Enright & zijn drummer Tommy DeQuattro) werd het optreden -iedereen was ondertussen in de juiste stemming- met een enthousiast applaus afgesloten.

Voor de 2008-show (Robillard was toen 60), die Duke Robillard deed met zijn eigen band, hield hij zich ook zowat aan zijn “vertrouwde” recept. Op de playlist stonden ook nu weer een mix van eigen nummers en covers, waarmee hij steeds naar wie hij opkijkt eert. Op die van de eerste set stonden o.a.Walter Price's “My Tears” en Eddie Boyd’s swingende “Blue Coat Man” genoteerd. In de tweede set kwamen Joe Turner’s “Honey Hush” en natuurlijk T-Bone Walker met het rustige wat jazzy, “Glamour Girl” en “Hard Way” aan de beurt. Robillard verliet Roomful Of Blues in 1980. De band begeleidde Big Joe Turner vaak. Vandaar de Joe Turner-tribute met “Honey Hush”. Robillard opende in de Moments club in Bremen met “Jump the Blues for You” (‘World Full of Blues’, 2007) en verder volgden ook nog “Do the Memphis Grind” (‘Guitar Groove-A-Rama’, 2006) en “Fishnet” (‘New Blues for Modern Man’, 1999). Voor de reguliere pauze passeerde, met een uitstekende Bruce Bears op piano, “Just Because” (‘A Swinging Session with’, 2008) nog de revue.

“Swingin’ with Lucy Mae” (‘A Swingin’ Session with’, 2008) opende de tweede set. “Goodtime Charlie” is een nummer uit zijn ‘Living with the Blues’ (2002) album. Het was -na ‘Duke’s Blues’ uit 1994- opnieuw een album, met enkel blues nummers op de tracklist die verwezen naar o.a. BB King, Brownie McGhee, Little Milton en Freddie King. “Gonna Get You Told” en “Bounce for Billy” (twee tracks uit ‘World Full of Blues’, 2007)waren de overige nummers.

“Tijdens de twee optredens die Duke Robillard deed in Bremen speelden beide bands van Robillard met een bijzonder gevoel voor swing en met indrukwekkend muzikaal vakmanschap. Dat gevoel werd door Radio Bremen gearchiveerd tijdens beide live opnames. Wat de aanwezigen in 1985 en 2008 ontroerde, kan je na 15 of 38 jaar opnieuw ervaren. We kunnen alleen maar dankbaar zijn, dat we die diepe emotionele ervaring in Bremen nu nog eens kunnen delen...” (ESC, Rootstime.be)
